All the people around you surround you, confound you They are seem the same. No one tries to speak you go for weeks with no squeak From any strangers And it’s all money this, money that, money chat That’s a fact. That’s the rate of the exchange ’round here. Oh well! The nine-to-five leaves you dead in your mind So you step out the door and go looking for more While the city’s sleeping – there you go! See the sparks tear down the track, Feel them flash as they shoot up your back As you get on the train and mind the gap Between old and new Between them and you. Hey there boy when you gonna/better/gotta Start acting your age? When you gonna give up the ghost? You coast the most of all those little music games When you gonna find a job/get a job/when you gonna stop Try’n’a make a name on stage? Oh well! The nine-to-five leaves you dead in your mind So you step out the door and go looking for more While the city’s sleeping – there you go! As you get out to the street The night air’s alive and under your feet There’s a pulsing of life, who knows you could meet Someone like you! And as your pushing through the crowds It’s hot there to breathe and the music’s so loud But through all the lights, the sights, the sounds They’re looking at you And not just right through…

It’s late in the evening and I’m lost in a dream Twisting and turning, on a murky mountain stream Heading somewhere, gravity pulls me down But I know not where I’m bound The water once ran clear from the deep dark down below First finally bursting forth in the morning’s early glows Have you ever dreamed, and it seemed that clear and cold? But what when dreams grow old? Hey there can you hear me, say there can you see me, Can you feel me now? Hey there are you gonna stay until tomorrow Or are you leaving now? I only wanna live in a life that’s not a living If you believe me now We can get there somehow I gotta get there… somehow. And over on the sides, they’re staring back at me All those people I have known now in their own realities Stranded now on the land, I wonder how and why Their rivers have run dry Hey there can you hear me, say there can you see me, Can you feel me now? Hey there are you gonna stay until tomorrow Or are you leaving now? I only wanna live in a life that’s not a living If you believe me now We can get there somehow I gotta get there… somehow It’s late in the evening and I’m lost in a dream!

Leave my cares by the open door, Feel the flow and my spirit soar, Soon I’m in the clouds high above this town See the streets softly mist away, Turn my face to the icy spray And I can’t recall how to get back down When it’s been a long time coming This life I’m loving, Oh, it’s been a long time coming As the chains start to leave my mind I feel it play as it moves in time With a natural tone, just like I was a child All alone, no one around, On a boat in a sea of sound And if I cut the chord, I could drift for miles and miles… In a long time coming This life I’m loving, Oh, it’s been a long time coming. Well, whatever don’t kill me makes me stronger, I think I want to live just a little while longer, Catch my breath, keep a hold, and come back swinging As myself, no one else, no one else. I’m on a train, a familiar track Stow my guitar in the luggage rack, Then I find a seat, further down the car And as I sit and watch the world go by I find the time stop and wonder why, How, where, what, wherefore… just who we are In a long time coming This life I’m loving, Oh, it’s been a long time coming In this life our bodies break But the mind alone does a person make So catch your breath, keep a hold and come back swinging As yourself And from the breakfast break to the tea-time-teeter While we’re watching the clock there’s no one feeding the meter So catch your breath, keep a hold and come back swinging As yourself So whatever don’t kill you makes you stronger You say you want to live a little while longer? Catch your breath keep a hold, and come back swinging As yourself, no one else, no one else

All is quiet on the set tonight And all the actors have gone home All except the lead in a pool of light He’s lit by candle wax alone Well I swear that I can’t take anymore of this Movie montage with that Bacharach score ’cause this reel to reel that’s replaced my life Is so obscure that no one will bite But it’s so cliché that Hollywood might If you just turn around and come back to me To the kiss embrace in the final scene As the credits roll to the top of the screen And I finally wake up from this celluloid dream They meet and they fall in love at first Lens gleamed with vaseline, oh, don’t they seem to have it all But by act three we fear the worst The fall from grace follows the fatal flaw So here’s hoping that they work on the sequel Where we’re in love again and things are equal ’cause this reel to reel that’s replaced my life Is so obscure that no one will bite But it’s so cliché that Hollywood might If you just turn around and come back to me To the kiss embrace in the final scene As the credits roll to the top of the screen And I finally wake up from this celluloid dream Now I’ll be accused of chewing the scenery And hamming it up but it just all comes so easily, now ’cause this reel to reel that’s replaced my life Is so obscure that no one will bite But it’s so cliché that Hollywood might If you just turn around and come back to me To the kiss embrace in the final scene As the credits roll to the top of the screen And I finally wake up from this celluloid dream

Pretty cloud high above The city where you fell in love Long ago, so long ago The brightest cloud is full of rain The sweetest love can cause you pain I’ll take it slow, ’cause that’s how I’ll know When you say, ‘I love you’ true What do you really mean? Is it the same for me as it is for you Or something inbetween, Between us all? String you along with me You’ll string me too, but we’re still free To come and go, oh come and go I’ll take the time to know your mind Is someone like you that hard to find? I’ll take it slow, ’cause that’s how I’ll know When you say, ‘I love you’ true What do you really mean? Is it the same for me as it is for you Or something inbetween, Between us all?

Up in the air I scrape the sky Imagining you were by my side I walk the floors you touched before And down below are millions more An ocean roars through salt-aired streets Down avenues and where they meet But high above I think of love And you’re the one that I’m thinking of Ooh, I hear the sounds, now Ooh, I’ll take a look around The city in the clouds I take to ground and hit the earth I breathe in fumes and taste the dirt Where water was is now unclear Incessant noise is all I hear Ooh, well I heard the sounds, now Ooh, I took a look around town (I went downtown) Ooh, well I heard the sounds, now Ooh, I took a look around The city in the clouds It’s funny how when things are near They often change how they appear When seen so far or out of view Is it the same for me and you?
7.
Have you ever felt the sinking As you’re thinking, ‘Is this my true calling’? And tumbling fumbling crumbling down, no one around Oh, that’s when you’re free falling. Free falling, gone three months now Since I cut my bounds and faced my disaster And skirting the shores of sadness and madness in us all Oh, I’ll find the answer You’re such a pretty girl, I know you’ll make it better When as two, me and you, we’ll fall together Well I was born with a restless mind And sometimes I find it’s thoughts quite appalling But sensing the swirling and twirling, unfurling flow I know Oh, that’s me – I’m free falling! I was so lost but I found you As I was free falling down into the deep blue With a flower in your hair you were there on the barstool And sweet lady you saved me you gave me Something, something to hold on to When I’m free, when I’m free falling So tell me: Have you ever felt the sinking As you’re thinking, ‘Is this my true calling’? And tumbling, fumbling, crumbling down, no one around Oh, that’s when you’re free falling Pretty girl! I know you’ll make it better When as two, me and you, we’ll fall… So take my hand now, baby, Twist with me, kiss me, let this be whatever the weather And as two, me and you, we’ll fall together
